Signs of Hearing Loss
Adults:
- People mumble
- Family complains the TV, radio, or stereo is too loud
- People complain you either talk too loud or too soft
- Difficulty hearing the waitress/waiter at restaurants
- You can hear people speak but cannot understand what is said
- You miss the punch line of jokes
- You don’t like watching movies or programs on TV because you can’t hear the dialogue over the sound effects
- You isolate yourself from difficult listening environments
- Your spouse/partner is your interpreter
- Frequent requests for people to repeat themselves
Infants
- Late to develop speech
- Only parents can understand what the child is saying
- Limited vocabulary
- Leaves off subtle word endings
- Developmentally a one-year-old should be using several one syllable words or close approximations: BALL, CUP, MORE, UP, DOWN, BYE-BYE
- A two-year-old should be using two word utterances; MORE JUICE, DADDY HOME, MY BALL,
- A three-year-old should have a vocabulary of approximately three hundred different words and be using three word utterances: GO OUT NOW, IN THE BOX, ME WATCH TV,
School age children
- Disruptive in the classroom
- Overly tired by the end of the day
- Struggles with basic concepts
- Delayed reaction, or reacts only to the action taken by schoolmates
- Misunderstands directions, although they are bright/intelligent children
